A Bathurst, N.B. teen is facing charges of attempted murder and aggravated assault after another teen was stabbed Monday afternoon.

Police say the victim, a 17-year-old boy from Big River, reported that he had been stabbed shortly after 6 a.m. Monday on Route 430 in Big River.

The victim was first taken to the Chaleur Regional Hospital and then transported to the Moncton Hospital for further treatment. He remains in hospital in stable condition.

Police in Bathurst arrested a 17-year-old male suspect in connection with the stabbing.

Police say the teen became violent, resisted the arrest and assaulted the police officers. They were not seriously injured in the incident but the teen is also facing a charge of assault on a police officer.

The suspect appeared in Bathurst provincial court Tuesday morning to face the charges and was sent for a 30-day psychiatric evaluation.

He is due back in court on June 1.
