A ski vacation came to a violent end for a Nova Scotia man who was stabbed to death at a hotel in Jasper, Alberta.

The family of 22-year-old Kenzie Beaton, originally of Mabou, says he was visiting the ski resort town with two friends for the weekend.

Jasper RCMP Sgt. Dave Maludzinski says a 21-year-old man and a woman in her twenties were staying in the room next to Beaton and his friends.

Maludzinski says RCMP were called to a disturbance at the hotel around 4 a.m. Saturday and that people from both of the hotel rooms were involved.

He says a noise complaint was made which led to an altercation in one of the rooms, although he wouldn't say which one, and Beaton was stabbed in the lower abdomen.

When officers arrived, a friend was applying pressure to Beaton's stab wound, but he was unconscious.

He was first taken to Seton General Hospital in Jasper and later airlifted to the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton, where he died late Saturday afternoon.

A statement from the Beaton family says his death has left residents of Mabou, a small Cape Breton community, in shock.

They go on to say that Beaton enjoyed life to the fullest and that he played many sports, especially hockey.

Cody Kyle Jenson, 21, has been arrested and taken into police custody in connection with the stabbing.

The Edmonton resident is due to appear in court on Feb. 9 to face a charge of second-degree murder.
