HALIFAX -- Two female pedestrians were taken to hospital after separate accidents at crosswalks in the Halifax area.

Police say a 56-year-old woman was badly injured yesterday when she was hit by an 18-wheeler as it was turning a corner on Old Sambro Road and Sussex Street.

The woman remains in critical condition with serious leg injuries.

The truck driver was handed a ticket for failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk.

About two hours later, a woman in a wheelchair was hit by a vehicle at the intersection of Mumford Road and Romans Avenue.

The 39-year-old was taken to hospital, but she is expected to recover from her injuries.
