The jobs of 31 full and part time workers at Canadian Blood Services in Saint John may be on the line after the agency said today it is re-organizing. As part of a nationwide restructuring plan the organization is planning to move to Dartmouth.
"We'll have donors give blood here and platelets," said Saint John's mayor, Ivan Court. "It will shipped to Nova Scotia and then we have to import it back. It doesn't make sense."
Concerns over blood supplies in Saint John have been raised. Amanda Cullen, spokesperson for the Canadian Blood Services, says the organization is taking steps to ensure proper distribution.
Cullen said that "there will be blood here in Saint John in stockholding unit as there is today. So there is some education that needs to be done."
The plan's deadline for a major collection and distribution facility is quickly approaching. New Brunswick's health minister, Madeleine Dubé, says decisions regarding a facility for Saint John will be discussed within the next five weeks.
