Wind and rain is nothing new in October, but today's torrential downpour has caused flooding in a number of areas across the region.

"There were record rainfall numbers across Nova Scotia today," said CTV Atlantic meteorologist Cindy Day. "Rain totals range from 60 to 100 millimetres across much of mainland Nova Scotia but there are lesser amounts for New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island."

Many Maritimers, particularly those in the Halifax area, found their drive home was slowed by road closures and detours due to flooding

Sewer drains filled to capacity and bubbled over, as roads transformed to pools Thursday afternoon.

"It was great until I got in my car and tried to drive home," said Halifax motorists Sid Schedrawe. "They got the street blocked off and I can't get in."

Halifax Regional Police released an advisory shortly after 4:30 p.m. warning motorists to slow down and drive carefully.

Flooding prompted the closure of a community centre in Dartmouth, and several roads were also shut down, including the Bedford Highway between Bayview Road and Flamingo Drive.

Residents were also warned of flooding on Hammonds Plains Road, where several vehicles stalled as they tried to drive through that section of road.

"It's a busy day, significant rain," says James Campbell, a spokesman with the Halifax Water Commission. "Lots of rain, lots of crews trying to empty out the catch basins and keep ahead of the flows."

Day says the rain is expected to taper to showers by midnight and the weather should clear by tomorrow morning.
