Bell Aliant says its telephone service has been fully restored in New Brunswick. The announcement was sent through its Twitter account around 2 p.m. Thursday.

Some people trying to call into New Brunswick reported receiving busy signals Thursday morning and many people in the province had difficulty calling out, particularly in the Moncton area.

The disruption affected both landline and cell phone service in the area, as well as 911 emergency services.

The city of Saint John asked citizens not to call 911 unless they had a serious emergency because the Aliant network was congested.

Police, fire and ambulance crews were strategically placed around the city in anticipation of emergencies.

Bell Aliant has not confirmed the cause of the outages, but CTV News received reports that a major fibre optic line had been cut in northern New Brunswick, which caused the disruption.

Crews began working to restore phone service Thursday morning. The disruption lasted for about three hours.

CTV News also received reports that some Rogers customers were affected by the disruption as well.
