FREDERICTON - One person is being treated for smoke inhalation in a Fredericton hospital after a blaze started in an apartment building early Friday.

The Red Cross says the fire at 511 Lisgar Street in Fredericton forced more than a dozen people to flee from the building around 3 a.m.

The fire caused extensive damage to one apartment and the smoke spread quickly through the eight-unit building.

The Red Cross says most of the tenants found places to stay with family and friends, while the agency arranged for emergency lodging for others.

Police say they are treating the fire as suspicious.

The victim being treated in hospital is said to be in stable condition.
